Corte Madera

Welcome to Corte Madera

Small town charm with upscale urban amenities

Corte Madera means “chop wood” in Spanish, and it was so named because of the area’s prolific redwood trees, which were used to build other towns and cities, most notably San Francisco. The Gold Rush in Sacramento Valley, in the mid-1800s brought the famous “49ers,” who helped to populate the town. Today, Corte Madera is a vibrant place known for its outdoor lifestyle and laid-back attitude.

Here, you’ll find a blend of single-family homes, condominiums, and exclusive, fashionable dwellings. This happy mix creates a beautiful town with tree-lined streets, wide-open green spaces, and a relaxed outdoor living atmosphere.

Residents respect their history, and life still centers around the Old Corte Madera Square (originally the Railroad Square around the train station) with a hip open-air shopping center known as The Village at Corte Madera. It includes many uptown, flourishing retailers as well as restaurants, bars, and other services. There is also the upscale Town Center, boasting high-end retail chains, one-of-a-kind boutiques, restaurants, cafes, salons, a farmers’ market, and more.

After shopping, go ahead and stop at Marin Joe’s Restaurant for Italian and American food, and make sure you try the Veal Parmigiana. If you want to just hang out and vibe with other community members, Philz Coffee is the place to be, and all coffee blends are crafted by Phil himself. For the ultimate in hanging out, relaxing, and schmoozing, you must head straight away to Book Passage. This over-the-top bookstore has it all:  books, ticketed events, author signings, writing classes, photography classes, children’s area, and more.

Corte Madera absolutely lives up to its outdoor reputation. The 20-acre Town Park offers picnic areas, a skate park, playground, tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, and walking paths. The Corte Madera Marsh Ecological Reserve sports a variety of ponds, marshes, shorebirds, waterfowl, and endangered saltmarsh species. Bring your binoculars and enjoy an invigorating hike. You can also enjoy the nature sanctuary at Point Reyes National Seashore, which is only about a 30-minute drive away. Wine Country in the beautiful Napa and Sonoma valleys is also only half an hour away.

Corte Madera is served by the Larkspur-Corte Madera School District, with student test ranking in the top 5% of public schools in California.
