Fairfax

Welcome to Fairfax

Small town living—big town fun

Fairfax is a sweet little town that measures only 2.2 square miles in area but has a history ten times that size. Its quirky claim to fame came about in the mid-1800s when it was the location of the last real physical duel in California. Fast-forward 100 years to the mid-1900s, and Fairfax found itself to be a hotspot for celebrities, such as Irving Berlin, John Handy, The Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane. Now in the 21st century, Fairfax continues to be a lively and unique place to live.

Residents of Fairfax enjoy a mix ranging from modest, single-family homes to condominiums to luxurious estates. There’s a place for everyone in Fairfax, and with Stinson Beach and the Pacific Ocean, only 16 miles to the west, year-round beauty and fresh air are available to all, compliments of mother nature.

The locals love to schmooze at the Fairfax Scoop, known for its organic ice cream and frozen yogurt, apropos in such a warm climate. Try a Salted Caramel if you are so inclined.  Man cannot live on ice cream alone, however, and if you love New Orleans-style food, head on over to The Hummingbird for the Po’Boy sandwich with fried chicken. For irresistible Italian cuisine, dine inside or out at Sorella Caffe, and ask for the Fettuccine Al Pesto. You won’t regret it.

There’s always something to do in Fairfax. If you’re a moviegoer, the Fairfax Theatre is a cozy movie house replete with comfy reclining seats and the best popcorn in town, all in a vintage atmosphere. For a rowdier time, there’s the annual Fairfax Brewfest with down-home, unusual, and exotic beers. Another fun annual event is the Fairfax Craft Faire with music, baked goods, and unique crafts. It has become a beloved community event.

You will also find green space within walking distance at Peri Park. Fairfax is known for being a bicyclist’s paradise. You will be pleasantly surprised with the Marin Museum of Bicycling and the annual Biketoberfest with live music, beer tasting, cool bikes to check out, and more.

Fairfax has a beautiful climate and is ideally located. It’s only a 30-minute drive to San Francisco, 30 minutes to the gorgeous nature sanctuary at Point Reyes National Seashore, and 40 minutes to the Sonoma and Napa valleys and all their lush wineries.

Fairfax is served by the Ross Valley School District and the Tamalpais Union High School District. It is notable for the White Hill Middle School (grades 6-8), which ranks in the top 10% in California.
