San Rafael

Welcome to San Rafael

Steeped in rich history paired with eclectic culture

San Rafael, popularly known as the “City with a Mission,” is saturated in historical landmarks and beautiful scenery. The community, named after Archangel Raphael, the Angel of Healing, was founded in 1817. San Rafael is known for its eclectic buildings, as shown in its large, upscale homes. With nice weather for most of the year, the community has the chance to experience nearby attractions. The parks, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance.

The restaurants in San Rafael are primarily found downtown, paired with beautiful views along calming waterfronts. Like its neighborhood, diversity is reflected in the cuisines available. From the Spanish and French influences at Revel and Roost Brick Oven Kitchen to the locally owned, farm-to-table gastropub, State Room Brewery, which was awarded the Best Brew Pub in Marin County in 2021.

Along with the variety of restaurants and cuisines to enjoy, San Rafael also has a number of pubs and bars to accompany the delectable dishes. Flatiron, equipped with lounge chairs and screens to watch the game, has a range of beers and even teas and natural juices. Il Davide Restaurant offers its patrons cuisines of Italian influence. Their traditional Italian dishes go well with their assortment of prosecco and beer.

San Rafael is decked with museums and restored landmarks that make for good entertainment. The Marin Civic Center is one of the county’s most treasured attractions. They offer private tours of the institution built in 1957. Another historic building adored by locals is the Falkirk Cultural Center. This destination, built in 1888, has tours of its luscious gardens as well as enlightening art exhibits.

In a move to support local farmers, locals can visit the San Rafael Farmers Market to grab produce and groceries. Eateries line the streets of downtown San Rafael, and the Downtown San Rafael Arts District is on Fourth Street. Here, local talent, businesses, and community life thrive as a hub for the neighborhood’s artists. When the sun goes down, on Thursdays and Fridays, patrons gather in the West End Village for their weekly “Dining Under the Lights” event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Pacific’s Baseball team is the beloved minor league home team of San Rafael and has several games that locals can attend.

The China Camp State Park is the perfect place for a family day out or simply a day to appreciate nature. It offers hiking, biking, and camping. Boyd Park is another option for indulging in nature’s beauty. This park facilitates picnics and has a playground for the young and the young-at-heart. Children are often attracted to the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco, where they are engulfed in the wonders of marine life, less than 30 minutes away.

San Rafael is an attractive neighborhood for many reasons, the main one being how incredibly diverse and inclusive it is — both in its people and its attractions and food. Its renovated landmarks add character to the neighborhood, and its museums teach locals how and why these monuments came to be.
